Sound Journeys
A sound healing session involves a variety of instruments that produce sound, guiding the body through experiences toreduce stress and chronic tension. This process supports the body in its restorative phase, helping it return to a state of bliss.

Sound Journeys
What is happening physically?
Sound is vibration travelling through a medium, and your ears convert those vibrations into signals your brain interprets as sound.During a sound journey, however, the main intended effect is generally relaxation and focused attention, rather than the sound physically “healing” a particular organ or changing your cells. Some people experience sensations such as tingling, heaviness, warmth, emotional release, or even falling asleep, while others simply find it calming.
Whats Happening Emotionally
Emotionally, a sound journey can sometimes feel surprisingly deep because you're giving yourself permission to stop doing and start feeling. A sound journey can create a deeply relaxed state where your mind becomes quieter and emotions may become more noticeable. You might experience feelings such as sadness, joy, relief, gratitude, or even cry without knowing exactly why.
Sounds and relaxation can also bring up memories, images, or physical sensations. This doesn't necessarily mean anything is wrong or that the emotion has a specific hidden meaning.
The main idea is that by slowing down and giving yourself space to simply feel, emotions that were in the background can become easier to notice and process. There’s no “right” way to experience it, everyone responds differently.
-
1. Getting comfortable — 5–10 minutes
You usually lie down on a yoga mat, often with a blanket and pillow. The facilitator may ask you to close your eyes and take a few slow breaths.2. The sounds begin — 10–20 minutes
You might hear gentle chimes, singing bowls, soft drums or other instruments. At first, your mind may still be busy—thinking about work, conversations, or what you need to do later. That's completely normal.3. Going deeper — 20–45 minutes
The sounds become more layered and immersive. You may notice:Your body feeling heavier or very relaxed
Thoughts becoming less frequent
Feeling like you're drifting in and out of sleep
Tingling or warmth
Changes in your sense of time
Emotional feelings or memories surfacing
Occasionally, vivid imagery or colours behind closed eyes
You don't need to experience any of these. Some people simply lie there and enjoy the sounds.
4. Coming back — 45–60 minutes
The sounds gradually become quieter. There may be several minutes of silence. The facilitator then gently guides you to move your fingers and toes, stretch, open your eyes and sit up. -
Emotionally, a sound journey can sometimes feel surprisingly deep because you're giving yourself permission to stop doing and start feeling.
A few things can happen:
Your usual mental noise quiets down. When you're not busy talking, working, scrolling, or solving problems, emotions that were sitting in the background can become more noticeable.
You may feel emotionally safe or held. Lying down, being guided, and hearing repetitive soothing sounds can create a sense of comfort and vulnerability.
Feelings can surface unexpectedly. Sadness, relief, gratitude, anger, tenderness, or even joy may appear without an obvious reason. It doesn't necessarily mean something is wrong—it can simply be an emotion becoming noticeable.
Crying can happen. Sometimes people cry without feeling particularly sad. Tears can accompany relaxation, relief, overwhelm, or a feeling of being touched emotionally.
You may experience memories or imagery. A sound, atmosphere, or relaxed state can bring associations to mind. This doesn't necessarily mean the memory has some hidden psychological meaning.
You can feel lighter afterward. The combination of rest, attention, and emotional processing can leave some people feeling peaceful, spacious, grounded, or tired.
One important distinction: the sound isn't necessarily “releasing trauma” or removing stored emotions from your body, despite language you may hear in some wellness settings. There are plausible relaxation and meditation mechanisms, but specific claims about sound frequencies releasing particular emotions aren't well established scientifically.
And there's no “correct” emotional response. You might have a profound experience or spend your journey thinking about your shopping list. Both are completely normal. 🙂
-
A few things are happening at once. You're lying still, reducing external stimulation, breathing slowly, and repeatedly bringing your attention back to sound. That combination can encourage the nervous system toward a rest-and-relaxation state.
It's somewhat similar to meditation, except instead of concentrating on your breath or a mantra, the sound is your anchor.
-
Not really. You remain conscious and can open your eyes, move around on your mat, or stop whenever you want. You aren't being controlled by the sound journey facilitator.
-
For most people, it's a gentle relaxation practice. If you find loud or sudden sounds uncomfortable, particularly very loud gongs or drums, it's perfectly reasonable to tell the facilitator beforehand and position yourself farther away from the instruments. We will accommodate to your individual needs during your personal session.
And importantly, you don't have to “achieve” anything. Falling asleep, having lots of thoughts, feeling nothing unusual, or simply enjoying the sounds are all perfectly normal outcomes.
If you're curious about why people sometimes cry, see colours, feel vibrations, or have emotional experiences during sound journeys, that's an interesting part of it too.
